Once a top downloaded mobile app, Shazam’s dominance has declined in recent years.

When it comes to music recognition apps, Shazam and SoundHound have been in a fierce battle. Shazam had the history, as one of the first applications for recognizing music, but SoundHound came in with some fresh functionality that made it a prime competitor to take down the music recognition giant.

For a while it could be argued that both were somewhat interchangeable, although SoundHound had some of the cooler features. Now, it seems, SoundHound has solidified itself as the best music recognition app available, and it’s not even close.

Reasons to Download SoundHound Over Shazam

1)It’s Free

Yes, the creators of SoundHound have finally decided to offer SoundHound ∞ for free. You are no longer limited to only 5 tags a month (which was a feature designed to encourage you to buy the unlimited version for almost 6 dollars). They now have ads, but ads are easy enough to ignore. Shazam still limits you to 5 recognized songs per month. This reason alone would make SoundHound the better app.

2)It’s Fast

In Shazam’s defense, it’s gotten much faster since the last update. But SoundHound is a lightning fast app. Often it doesn’t occur to me to check the song until it’s almost over, and I can break out SoundHound, click the button, and within a few seconds the song is located. Shazam would often take 15 to 20 seconds, which is a long time to hold your iPhone to a radio.

3)It’s Cooler

Okay, this isn’t a fair adjective, but SoundHound has additional features that make it far more interesting than a basic music recognition app. SoundHound allows you to hum or sing a song that’s in your head, and the app will recognize it. That’s incredible. Shazam only recognizes the actual song.

Now, again, in Shazam’s defense, SoundHound’s humming/singing feature isn’t well defined, and often songs get mistaken for vastly different songs, but there is a good chance that I don’t know how to hum or sing, so I’m letting SoundHound slide on that one.

Now that SoundHound is free, it’s easily one of my favorite apps in the app store. It’s not just music recognition I use it for. Sometimes it’s music memory – helping me remember an artist I want to download in the future, or a song I used to like in the past. SoundHound is a great app, and easily one of the best apps available for music lovers.
